9th Championship Show: 2nd October 2005

Dr Sarah Hemstock (Jolihem) - UK

Firstly, I would like to thank everyone for a lovely quality entry and for the sporting way in which my decisions were received. I had a very enjoyable day, the show was very well organised with a great atmosphere and an entry of 109. The outside venue & good weather provided ideal conditions for the show. Generally exhibits were presented in lovely fit condition and were a credit to their owners who handled their exhibits very well. The breadth of quality in the bitch classes tended to be better than that of the dogs, which is what I usually find when judging in the UK - this is how it should be as bitches are the foundation & cornerstone of any kennel.

Since I judge by assessing an exhibit's good points, not "fault judge" I do not critique particular exhibit's faults. It is for this reason that I would like to describe some of the more general faults I found as well as to congratulate breeders and owners on their exhibit's good points.  On the whole the exhibits were very good with plenty of breed type and I was pleased with the overall quality of the entry. Exhibits were physically fit and the majority appeared to be well within the height limits set by the standard. Generally, pigmentation was good but a few exhibits had light eyes which bore no relation to their coat colour.

The majority of exhibits were well constructed and moved soundly but some had "stilted" hind action and tended to move close behind and in some cases forequarters did not remain parallel when on the move. By and large, heads were correct with distinct stop & plenty of strength.  On the negative side, there were many mouth faults including converging canine teeth on the lower jaw, rye mouths, small teeth and slightly overshot bites. However, I was pleased that the mouths of all my winners were correct & the situation has improved since I last judged in Australia over 10 years ago. I don’t mind broken or worn teeth, but the Stafford is a Terrier & as such should have a correct scissor bite.
