8th Championship Show: 3rd April 2005 Mrs Justine Blyth (Bustabones) - Tas |
|
Thank you to the ACT and Dist SBT Club for inviting me to judge their 8th Championship Show. I had a wonderful day and was made to feel very welcome. I thought the quality of the entry was wonderful and there were some really hard classes to separate placegetters. The dogs were good and I was really happy with my winners, in some classes there were standout winners, but in others it was really hard work. Although I have to say that I thought there was more depth in the bitches, there were a few classes where it was really tough to separate the placegetters and I was really quite spoiled for choice. I stood and admired the Challenge Bitch line up and thought it augured really well for our breed.
I found that mouths were for the most part good. I found only 3 undershot and only about the same with untidy teeth. I did notice quite a few exhibits with missing molars, this really needs the care and attention of breeders to ensure that we don’t end up with a commonly occurring problem (as is experienced in some other breeds), always bearing in mind what our breed was bred to do.
Canines were ok, most of the converging ones were in the younger classes and of course these may rectify themselves with age. I certainly did not worry about broken teeth (especially in the older exhibits) – Staffords being Staffords. I also did not notice any canines that appeared to have been filed down.
One area of concern I noticed, in some exhibits, was a very wide hind movement, almost a rotary action. Drive here is minimal and this does not enable the Stafford to move with an economy of effort, movement required of our breed.
Heads were very good and most exhibits had the correct dark eye and rose ears, to complete the correct expression. Fronts were mostly straight, although some exhibits may benefit from elbows slightly tighter. Toplines were fairly good and hindquarters were well muscled and angulation was ok. Tails were carried fairly well. I thought the condition of the majority of the exhibits was excellent and the entry of Staffords were happy and confident.
I guess (unfortunately) that the colour of my own Staffords was reflected in the colour of the majority of my entry, but I really enjoyed the pieds, whites and reds making an appearance. Pigment and quality in the reds, pieds and whites I thought was excellent.
I must apologise for not having a full critique for the neuter class. Thankyou again to everyone for a wonderful entry.

CLASS 1 - BABY PUPPY DOG (12) 1. Faithful’s Ourknights Red Ht Rumour (Novastaff Beamish Red x Sharpshot Storms Kiss) Red Dog – Just 3mths old. Very pleasing head and expression, black mask with good pigment. Small neat ears and correct dark round eye. Scissor bite with well placed canines. Well made at this early stage with level topline, straight front and ample bone, with well angled hindquarters. Good outgoing Stafford temperament. 2. Oldenburg’s Staffyhaus Drummer Boy (Ch Bustabones Howard ULikIt x Ch Staffyhaus Tiffani Hasti) Black Brindle – Not much between 1 and 2, again, just 3mths old - Another baby with a pleasing head and expression from dark round eyes. Larger ears than one, but still rose and well placed. Strong puppy with good bone. Movement not quite as together as 1 but he is a heavier puppy. Also well made with good straight front, well angled hindquarters. Scissor bite with well placed canines. 3. Chandler & Chapman’s Coswecan Alabama (Ch Gecane TheVicarOvCoseley x Carburg Daring Shikynar) Brindle – 5mths old. Strongly built youngster with good bone. Going up on leg and through the “ganglies” but should mature into a good type. Good head with dark eyes and neat ears. Showed well for his handler. Scissor bite. 4. Craig’s Powerbilt Double Agent (Willspride Finnigan x Tykabul Think Twice) Brindle – 5mths old. Another good type of puppy, very little to separate between my placegetters. Well put together – good correct bone. Moved with purpose and drive. Pleasing head with correct rose ears and the darkest of round eyes. Scissor bite. 5. Faithful Ourknights Shot Of Beam (Novastaff Beamish Red x Sharpshot Storms Kiss) Red – 3mths old. A well made puppy but at this stage is plainer in head than the other placegetters, but with correct dark round eyes and neat rose ears. A well made baby with level topline, good straight front and well-angled hindquarters. Scissor bite.
CLASS 2 - MINOR PUPPY DOG (4) 1. Basson’s Rayonnoire The Nomad (Takilla Taboo Noir - Imp UK x Ch Knockon Bittersweet - Imp UK) Black Brindle – Just 6mths old. Very striking youngster, puppy in good bloom and feeling his oats today - giving his handler a hard time. Lovely head and expression, strong blunt muzzle and good rise of skull. He has dark round eyes and small neat ears. Scissor bite. Good straight front and well-muscled hindquarters. Was being naughty on the move, but still covered ground and held his topline well. Good bone, nothing overdone on this youngster a quality puppy. 2. Brindale Knls’ Brindale No Boundaries (Niatona The Silent Assassin - Imp UK x Ch Brindale Maid to Mystify) Red – Just 6mths old. Strong well boned puppy. Just preferred the headpiece and overall type of 1 at this early stage. Lovely pigment, with dark round eyes and black toenails. Scissor bite. He has a strong topline a good straight front and well angled hindquarters. Would like to see him move out just a little more with his handler. 3. Faithful’s Belleden Ghost N Darkness (Ch Belleden Devil Ov Orion x Ch Pitford Princess Azeri) White/Brindle Pied – Nearly 8mths. Pleasing head, with dark round eyes and neat ears. Scissor bite. A well made youngster who moved well coming and going. Good straight front and well-angled hindquarters. Just preferred breed type of 1 and 2. 4. Wyowna Knls’ Brindale Touch Down (Niatona The Silent Assassin - Imp UK x Ch Brindale Maid to Mystify) Brindle – Just 6mths old. Another strongly made puppy. He was being a “boy” and not co-operating with his handler today. Scissor bite. Difficult to assess his movement, but when he settled he was true coming and going. When standing he was quite well made and another with excellent pigment.
CLASS 3 - PUPPY DOG (2)
1. Butler & OBrien’s Tanspark White Night (Ch Tanspark Aka Daka x Ch Topstud White Pearl) White – 12 mths. A strongly built puppy. Strong head, with one soft ear. Presented in hard condition. Scissor bite. 2. Gardner & Martin’s Staffstruck Snow Warrior (Staffstruck High Velocity x Ch Staffstruck Malibu Dreams) Pied – Nearly 12mths. Lightly made dog, going through the “leggies”. Good pigment, correct dark round eyes. Scissor bite.
CLASS 4 - JUNIOR DOG (11, 2 Abs)This was a really strong class and the decisions were very hard, with not much separating my placegetters. I have no doubt that these boys could change places on another day.
Black Brindle – Nearly 14 mths. Placed first in a strong class. Loved this boy’s head, punishing foreface with good rise of skull and beautiful dark round eyes, with small neat rose ears. Scissor bite. A good standard sized dog with nothing overdone. Strong, straight front and well-muscled hindquarters. Very short in back. Moved well both ways. A promising youngster. 2. Truhart Knl’s Truhart Mojo Rising (Ch Truhart Black Night x Truhart Night Shadow) Black Brindle – Nearly 15mths. Another dog of lovely breed type. I really enjoyed this class. A heavier type of dog than 1. Pleasing head with good expression, would like a shade rounder eye (to be critical), but they were dark and well placed. Scissor bite. A well made fellow, although elbows could be tighter, this of course, may improve with some work and maturity. Moved well with purpose and drive from well muscled hindquarters. 3. Faulk’s Berlstock Eyes Wide Shut (Ch Mataroo Warru x Ascalon Cause A Scene) Brindle – Nearly 15mths. A well made and good moving dog. Not quite the head of my first 2 but may also be slower to develop. Scissor bite. Good strong straight front and level topline. Hind quarters were well muscled, but I would have preferred just a little more turn of stifle. Another in a good class. 4. Classicstaff Knl’s Borstaff Thman In Black (Ch Kelstock Nikkis Black Magic - Imp UK x Borstaff Lollapalooza) Black Brindle – Nearly 15mths. Liked this fellow when he first came into the ring. Another dog of good type and commands attention when standing. I have no doubt that this fellow will turn heads. Strong head and lovely dark eyes with a very animated expression. Well made, with good bone. Scissor bite. Good side and front gate, but would just prefer more drive from hindquarters, movement was a little wide for me behind. Worked well for his handler.
5. Marsh’s Neworder Mr Ripley (Ch Truhart Black Night x Bonnystaff Atomic Baby) Black Brindle – Nearly 16mths. A showman for sure. Muzzle strong with pronounced cheek bumps, just not quite the rise of skull. A correct dark eye with alert expression and neat rose ears. Scissor bite. Moved with purpose, but was a little wide behind for me. Not quite the head of previous place getters, still of good type. Handled to perfection.
CLASS 5 - INTERMEDIATE DOG (15, 3 Abs) Another strong class with some great heads and movement - more difficult decisions. 1. Trimble’s Stoneheart One Eye Jack (Ch Powerpaws Beyond the Law x Stoneheart Bonny McGinty) RESERVE DOG White – Nearly 3yrs. Strong upstanding lad that immediately took my eye. Very striking white with brindle eye patch. He has a strong punishing head, with pronounced cheek bumps and good rise of skull, expression correct with the darkest of eyes and small neat rose ears. Correct scissor bite with well placed canines. Flows from neck into shoulders and has the best of fronts. Well boned, but not overdone. A strong level topline, held standing and on the move, with well angled hindquarters with short hocks. Moved with purpose and drive, handled very well. It was a close call for the CC – very happy to award him Reserve Challenge. 2. Koendidda Knl’s Ch Koendidda Umrum (Grand Ch Highbourne Luskin Star x Ch Koendidda Manhatten Jazz) White – Nearly 3yrs. Another striking white fellow. Similar in head proportions to 1, strong blunt muzzle and good rise of skull – nothing to fault here. He had keen expectant expression through lovely dark round eyes. Scissor bite with well placed canines. Presented in great condition. Great front assembly and well boned. I split my 1 and 2 preferring the hind quarters of 1, having more turn of stifle. Still, this lad moved with attitude and purpose and I heard him telling the other lads in the class how good he was. Another good one in a strong class. 3. Bambach & Tattersall’s Ch Staffbach Bullet Proof (Ch Kelstock Nikkis Black Magic - Imp UK x Borstaff Fanny Fredrika) Black Brindle – Nearly 2yrs. Liked this lads type, a well made dog that is very “smooth” in flowing from neck to shoulders and topline. He is not as mature as 1 and 2, but still a quality dog. Moved and showed well for his handler. Not quite the headpiece of 1 and 2, but this was a class where the heads were strong throughout and his is still very pleasing. Scissor bite with well placed canines. He is well boned with a strong straight front and well angled hindquarters. I am sure we will hear more from this fellow in the future as he matures. 4. Brindale’s Niatona The Silent Assasin - Imp UK (Baysend Nice One Cyril - UK x Araidh Devils Brew - UK) Brindle – Nearly 2yrs. This fellow had a lovely headpiece, the roundest of dark eyes and tiny rose ears. Scissor bite with well placed canines. A very immature dog and no doubt a handful. Not quite the mover of my other 3, but will be interesting to see how he matures. Presented in good hard condition. 5. Pratt’s Ch Prattstaff Your Zenith (Ch Highbourne Baryshnikov x Pitshaft Prattstaffs Ace - Imp NZ) Black Brindle – 18mths. Striking dog with strong headpiece, good rise of skull and punishing muzzle. Scissor bite with well placed canines. Good strong straight front and well boned. Would prefer a stronger topline and a little more turn of stifle. Presented in tip top condition, his coat was gleaming. Very well handled.
CLASS 10 - AUSTRALIAN BRED DOG (11, 3 Abs) 1. Holohan’s Ch Linwest Back In Black DOG CHALLENGE, AUSTRALIAN BRED IN SHOW (Grand Ch Jenrana Black Mail x Jehard Last Love) Black Brindle - Nearly 2 years. Liked this lad as soon as he came into the ring. Very strong and upstanding, but not coarse. A punishing headpiece, strong muzzle, well pronounced cheek bumps and good rise of skull - complimented by dark round eyes and neat ears. Correct scissor bite with well placed, large, canines. Although he is a top sized fellow, he is balanced and not too heavy. I liked him very much on the move and he held his topline whilst standing and moving. Good strong front assembly, with good clean shoulders, he is well boned. Quarters were well muscled. He was handled very well and presented in lovely condition. This lad is not yet 2yrs and I will be very interested to see him once fully mature. Although he had clearly decided by BIS he had had quite enough, I was please to award him the Dog Challenge and Best Australian Bred In Show. 2. Strickland’s Linwest Jack Frost (Nuklnoz Vincent Comet x Jehard Last Love) White - Nearly 3yrs. Striking fellow that never stopped showing. Presented a very attractive picture when standing. Very strong head, not quite as clean as my 1st place dog. Eyes could have been a little darker, but they were still in keeping with his coat colour – white with red. Scissor bite. He is well boned and held a good level topline. His front was straight when standing but came in to centre line a little when moving, elbows were tight. He has well muscled hindquarters. Good type. 3. Lynch & Meur’s Ch Cherebah Revelation (Ch Almawill Under Pressure x Knockon Total Eclipse - Imp UK) Black Brindle – 3 yrs. Not quite the head of 1 and 2 but still pleasing expression with dark eyes and neat ears. A very well made dog. Good standard size. Scissor bite. Moved well both ways and held a level topline. Won the place on his soundness and overall conformation. 4. Mortimer’s Chablakmor Devils Advocate (Ch Lockstaff Black Venom x Ch Chablakmor Dynamite News) Black Brindle – Nearly 3 yrs. Another top sized dog. Beautiful head piece, with expression to match and the smallest rose ears. Scissor bite. Was not quite as good on the move as the dogs in front but won the place on his lovely head and overall breed type. 5. Wolf & Dhu’s Ourgang Tomorrow Blongs TMe (Grand Ch Boldhart Booker Bates x Ourgang True Love N Chaos) Red – 2 ½ yrs. Good standard sized lad, pleasing head and expression. Dark eyes and neat ears. Good pigment. Scissor bite. Well boned. Moved well coming and going. Just preferred the overall breed type of the dogs in front.
CLASS 11 - OPEN DOG (12, 1 Abs) 1. Frazer’s Grand Ch Highbourne Luskin Star (Ch Leatherwood Iron Mike x Grand Ch Highbourne Mummys Pet) Brindle – Nearly 6yrs. A striking dog who stood and watched me the whole time - he never stopped showing. He was in very good condition. He has a lovely clean head, with dark round eyes and the correct short, blunt muzzle, giving him typical Stafford expression. He is well boned, but not overdone in anyway. Scissor bite. He moved with economy of effort, with reach and drive. Stood on a strong straight front, with good depth of brisket and forechest. His hindquarters were well muscled. Won a strong class on his balance and overall breed type. A quality fellow. 2. Amos / Sioukas’ Ch Verysharp Pretty Boy (Ch Kelstock Nikkis Black Magic - Imp UK x Ch Verysharp The Sorceress) Black Brindle – Nearly 2yrs. Another quality, “bang on” standard sized dog and well balanced. Pleasing head and expression, not quite the muzzle strength of 1. Scissor bite. Good neck into shoulders and straight front, with well muscled hindquarters. It was difficult to separate these two, but just preferred head piece and substance of 1. 3. Marsh's Grand Ch Jenrana Black Mail (Ch Hadjibah Hanky Panky x Gr Ch Rapidfire Blade Runner) Black Brindle – 5 yrs. A top sized lad with lovely Stafford breed type. A strong head with a dark eye and small neat rose ears. Scissor bite. He is heavier in build than 1 and 2. Good straight front and level topline, with well muscled hindquarters. He moves with purpose. Another quality dog in a strong class. 4. Birkeland’s Ch Jamelkur Cruzin Star (Grand Ch Highbourne Luskin Star x Ch Ganglands Riverdance) Black Brindle – Nearly 3yrs. Strong headed dog with lovely expression and darkest of eyes, similar in type to dogs in front. Scissor bite. Well made with good bone. Was a shade longer than my other placegetters, but still held a strong level topline. Presented in A1 condition and handled to advantage. Quality dog in a strong class. 5. Evan’s Takilla Taboo Noir - ImpUK (Eng Ch Knockon Dance With The Devil UK x Takillas Taboo UK) Black Brindle – Nearly 4yrs. Another good type. Strong correct head with dark round eyes and small neat ears. Scissor bite. Very good front assembly and well boned. Would just like a little more hind angulation and spring of rib to complete the picture, but still a very nice dog. Presented in fit condition.
CLASS 18 – NEUTER DOG (3, 1 Abs) 1. Hayes’ Ourgang Harry Potter (Grand Ch Boldhart Booker Bates x Ourgang TrueLove N Chaos) 2. Lynch & Meurs’ Cherabah Meet Joe Black (Eastaff Causing Chaos Imp UK x Knockon Total Eclipse Imp UK)

Very nice head proportions for one so young. Round dark eyes and small neat rose ears. Everything as it should be at this early stage. Scissor bite with well placed canines. Held her topline whilst standing and moving and was alert and interested. Straight front and well angled quarters. Pleased to award her Baby In Show. 2. Oldenburg’s Staffyhaus All Is Calm (Ch Bustabones Howard ULikIt x Ch Staffyhaus Tiffani Hasti) Brindle – Just 3mths. Another good baby in a quality class. Similar make to 1, they were difficult to separate. Good head, with dark eyes and neat ears, scissor bite with well placed canines. Straight front and well angled quarters, also with good topline. Moved with purpose. Was not quite as together as 1 but still a promising baby. 3. Austin-Cleary’s Tykabul Crazy In Love (Grand Ch Chablakmor The Renegade x Tykabul What Goes Around) Black Brindle – Nearly 5mths. Nicely made puppy in a quality class. Older than 1 and 2. Pleasing head with a dark eye. Scissor bite. Did not quite hold her topline as well as 1 and 2 on the move but she is older and at a different stage of development. Straight front and well angled quarters. Presented a neat picture whilst standing and showed very well for one so young. 4. Birkeland’s Jamelkur Bowtie Babe (Grand Ch Highbourne Luskin Star x Ch Jamelkur Shoin Shine) Black Brindle – Nearly 6mths. Another nice puppy. Well made with a lovely overall shape. Another one at the top end of the class, going through the “leggies”. She has a pleasing head and expression through lovely dark eyes. Scissor bite. Difficult to separate the placegetters in this class. 5. Birkeland’s Exquisite Superstar (Ch Jamelkur Cruzin Star x Graciestaff Classic Chasy) White / Brindle Pied – Nearly 6mths. Strong flashily marked Pied lass at the top end of the class. Eyes were dark and round with neat rose ears. Not quite the rise of skull of my previous place getters, but with her strong muzzle, I am quite sure this will improve with age. Scissor bite. Good straight front and well-angled hindquarters. Moved and showed like a seasoned professional.
CLASS 2A - MINOR PUPPY BITCH (9, 1 Abs) 1. Frazer’s Highbourne Nine Carat RESERVE BITCH + RUNNER UP BIS + MINOR PUPPY IN SHOW (Ch Koendidda Umrum x Ch Highbourne Vintage Crop) Black Brindle – Nearly 8mths. This lass caught my eye as soon as she came into the ring. A standard sized bitch with a correct strong but feminine head and the darkest of round eyes, her expression is lovely. Muzzle is short and blunt with good rise of skull – nothing overdone. She has a correct scissor bite with well-placed canines. A balanced puppy who, when she settled, moved with reach, drive and economy of effort and held her topline. She is well boned with a good straight front and well angled strong hind quarters that I like. She has the balance of being strong, yet still feminine. Although she is a youngster, I liked her very much and it was my pleasure to award her Res BCC, Runner Up Best In Show and Minor Puppy In Show. 2. Trimble’s Rayonnoire Mad Molly (Takilla Taboo Noir - Imp UK x Ch Knockon Bittersweet - Imp UK) Black Brindle – 6mths. A heavier set girl. She has a strong head and very pleasing expression from dark round eyes. Not quite the strength of muzzle of 1. She has a scissor bite. This was a lovely class and difficult to separate. This girl won over 3 on her maturity and balance. She moved with purpose and confidence and stood on a strong straight front and well muscled hindquarters. Maybe carrying a little bit of extra weight – but still only a baby. 3. Evan’s Rayonnoire Mon Ami (Takilla Taboo Noir - Imp UK x Ch Knockon Bittersweet - Imp UK) Black Brindle – 6mths. Not as mature as 1 and 2 and seemed a little over-awed with the day. Very pretty head and expression through lovely dark eyes. She has a scissor bite. Well-angled hindquarters and straight front. Lost out to 2 on maturity and confidence, but still a promising puppy in a lovely class of youngsters. Will look forward to watching how she develops. 4. Koendidda Knl’s Eclypstaff Miz Trouble - Imp UK (Stormbull Blackthorn - UK x Eclypstaff Miss Behavin - UK) Black Brindle – Nearly 8mths. Another typey lass in a strong class. She has a lovely head piece, with good rise of skull and strength of muzzle, with dark round eyes. Not quite in as hard condition as previous placegetters but still very much a baby. Straight front and well muscled hindquarters, would like perhaps a little more turn of stifle. 5. Martin’s Joden Pitch Black (Ch Chablakmor The Renegade x Joden Delta Dawn) Black Brindle – 8mths. Similar in type to previous placegetters. Pleasing head and dark round eye, ears may be a little tidier – but they did not detract from her head and expression. Scissor bite. Stood on straight front, hindquarters well muscled. Slightly longer in body and not quite the substance of 4. Another promising puppy in a quality class.
CLASS 3A - PUPPY BITCH (8) 1. Bambach & Tattersall’s Staffbach Hakuna Matata (Cherabah ThDivil InBlack x Borstaff Fanny Fredrika) PUPPY IN SHOW Black brindle – Nearly 12mths. Steele’s Hellfyre Wayward Angel (Ch Tanaros Braveheart x Ch Alanaleigh Gogettemate) Black Brindle – Nearly 11mths. Strong upstanding girl presented in tip top condition, very eye catching. Very strong skull, would prefer muzzle to be a little stronger with more underjaw, to balance with skull. Scissor bite. Small neat ears. Would prefer a rounder and slightly larger eye. Very well put together lass, strong and straight in front and just as strong behind. 5. Wylie’s Stafflyte Star Ovation (Ch Gecane Just By Chance x Ch Stafflyte Touch The Sky) Brindle – Nearly 11mths. Pleasing head with dark round eyes, ears could be a bit neater. Scissor bite. Although not overly long in body, she is not quite as well ribbed back as previous placegetters, thus making her longer in loin. Moved well, carried a level topline whilst standing and moving. Good straight front, hindquarters well muscled but would prefer more turn of stifle. Attractive brindle. CLASS 4A - JUNIOR BITCH (12, 1 Abs) 1. Marsh’s Stoneheart X Factor (Grand Ch Jenrana Black Mail x Ch Doralmar Stone Maiden) JUNIOR IN SHOW Black Brindle – 15mths. Showy girl in tip top condition. Gave her handler 150%.Very soundly made girl who moved with drive and purpose. Another I liked very much, her head is strong with dark eyes and neat rose ears. She has a correct scissor bite with well-placed canines. A straight front and good level topline into strong hindquarters. Although on the day I just preferred the head pieces of my CC and Res, I would love to see this lass in another 12mths time, I am sure we will hear a lot more from her. Pushed hard for the CC and Res. It was my pleasure to award her Best Junior In Show. 2. Jennings’ Ch Jenrana Snow Queen (Ch Jenrana You’ve Got Male x Jenrana Make It Happen) White / Brindle Pied – Nearly 16mths. Another quality bitch of lovely breed type. Close between 1 and 2. Lost out to 1 on rise of skull, but this girl still has a very pleasing head. Scissor bite. Darkest of eyes and lovely expression. Strong straight front and good short back. Presented in very good condition. Moved well, true coming and going, with purpose. Hindquarters were strong and well muscled, not quite the turn of stifle of 1. A top quality lass unlucky to meet 1 in a very nice class. 3. Mortimer’s Truhart The Darkness (Ch Truhart Black Night x Truhart Night Shadow) Black Brindle – Nearly 15mths. Unlucky to meet 1 and 2. Another girl of good breed type. Head very feminine and a lovely shape, dark round eyes and small neat ears complete the picture. Scissor bite. She is well made with a straight front and well muscled hindquarter, would prefer a little more turn of stifle to give her more drive. Not quite the substance of 1 and 2. A very nice bitch in a strong class. 4. Mortimer’s Chablakmor Reality Bites (Chablakmor Devils Brew x Ch Jeneld Ice Maiden) White – Nearly 13mths. Good standard sized girl, very short in back with a level topline and good spring of rib. Would like a little more rise of skull, but her expression is nice and feminine.
